This iconic Hartland landmark is believed to have been associated with a nearby warren, and was possibly the Warreners house or lodge. It was later fashioned into a Victorian Folly. This site was the focus of a recent community archaeological survey to identify the possible site of the Warren. The excavation report also outlines the history of the area in medieval times.

In 1988, ‘Paper House’ was shot along the cliffs of Hartland Quay (the Warren) and  scenes of a fake lighthouse were created on Hillsborough, above Ilfracombe Harbour.This dark fantasy film starred Charlotte Burke, Elliot Spies and Ben Cross.
