Hartland Quay

The North Devon Coast AONB is defined by its Special Qualities. These are what make our AONB so special. There are 14 Special Qualities and for each of these we have chosen a place within the AONB where you can see what we mean.

Special Quality 5 –  Wild coastal scenery. In the north, hogsback cliffs of varying heights; in the south high, rugged cliffs, dramatic rock formations, exposed headlands, wave cut platforms and rocky coves.

Taken from Damehole Point, looking south towards Hartland Quay this view captures the wild, dramatic and rugged nature of the exposed coastline of the Atlantic Coast, no wonder it was nicknamed the “Iron Coast” by mariners. Many a luckless sailing ship has come to grief on these rocks.
