Larkstone Beach

Larkstone is on the eastern side of Ilfracombe Harbour. It was a “lasting beach” where vessels discharged their ballast when entering Ilfracombe harbour. Immediately behind the beach are the remains of an old limekiln and a grassy area which is great for picnicking. The Larkstone Pleasure Grounds were very popular with visitors in the 20th century, providing tennis courts, pitch and putt golf and a café, much of which remains today. It is reputed that ancient hut circles possibly linked to Hillsborough Hillfort could once be found closeby.

Larkstone limekiln’ shown on os 25″ (1880s) map (os). ‘Old’ limekiln shown on 2nd edn os map at s end of Larkstone beach. Shown on 1890 OS map with 2 associated buildings.
