Site of Westward Ho Pier

Westward Ho! Pier was built in about 1870. It was built from Rocks Nose to the south west of the beach, to provide: “a handsome and commodious promenade and landing pier, available for embarking and disembarking of passengers and goods from the Steam Boats etc, in the Bay and thus preventing delays arising from the tidal bar harbour”. The Pier was built of Iron and cast Iron columns, but the constant battering from the severe winter storms proceeded to gradually wash the framework away. It was finally dismantled in 1880. Some of the iron foundation can still be seen at low tide.
