Hillsborough Volunteer Day

Run by the Friends of Hillsborough

The next volunteer day will be on Wednesday 20th May 10.00 – 3.30

Meet at the Pitch and Putt entrance/Friends of Hillsborough container by Larkstone car park:

All tools including gloves will be provided but please bring a packed lunch/drinks as required.
The plan depending on numbers and the weather is to do the following:

1) Build some new steps on the steep path at the bottom of the Pitch & Putt field that leads around to the concrete path to Raparee. This is a well used short section of path off the main Coast path but gets very slippery and muddy. We shall also lay some old road aggregate on the flatter sections.

2) Bracken bash the Ski Slope and Rampart Wildflower meadows. This is required to further suppress the Bracken which competes aggressively with the wildflowers that are now establishing and is generally considered best practice. We have two ’empty’ therefore light! rollers which we have found are ideal to bash the Bracken without damaging other plants too much.

On the same day the North Devon Parks team will also be mechanically Bracken bashing on the Iron Age Ramparts. This also encourages better biodiversity, visually highlights the ramparts and preserves any archaeological remains that may be present.

Hope to see you there and fingers crossed as ever for good volunteering weather!

Any new volunteers are most welcome and as always can do just as much or little as they can/want to!
