Chapel Woods – A Spring Woodland Wander

Event Date: 29th April 2023, 14:00

Event Category: Walk / Tour

Location: Chapel Woods

JOIN US ON THE BRAUNTON COUNTRSIDE CENTRE GUIDED WALK AROUND THE RSPB RESERVE AT CHAPEL WOODS WITH LOCAL NATURALIST, MARY BREEDS

The RSPB reserve at Chapel Wood, lying 3 miles north of Braunton, is a beautiful broadleaved woodland with an Iron Age hill fort. Tawny owls, nuthatches, as well as great spotted and green woodpeckers, regularly build their nests amongst the secluded woodland. In Spring, primroses, wood sorrel and pignut adorn the nature trail margins, with bluebells on the higher slopes of this broadleaved woodland.

With an impressive variety of birds and other wildlife for a small woodland, Chapel Wood is the perfect spot to visit in Spring for any nature enthusiast. Mary Breeds will be leading the short, gentle, walk around the circular path that follows the boundary of the woodland, exploring and identifying the Spring flora and fauna that thrive in this woodland.

The woodland path consists of some steep steps and some uneven terrain so is suitable for able bodied persons.

Please wear weather appropriate clothing and sensible walking boots.

Getting there:

Chapel Wood is 2 miles north of Braunton and signposted from Spreacombe. From Barnstaple take the A361 Ilfracombe road. Go through Braunton and Knowle. About 1.25 miles north of Knowle, take the turning to the left marked to Spreacombe. After 0.75 mile, at the fork, keep to the left over the bridge. The reserve is accessed along this road.
