This Memorial, placed adjacent to the coast path to the south of Hartland Point lighthouse, is dedicated to the Glenart Castle. The Glenart Castle was a steamship that was requisitioned for use as a British hospital ship during the First World War. On 26 February 1918, on her way out to France, she was hit and sunk by a torpedo from the German U-boat UC-56. Only a few survivors were reported, with 162 killed including eight nurses. At the time it was a very controversial incident, as the ship was fully illuminated as a hospital ship when sunk, the Germans later claiming that she was carrying arms to France. The wreck lies somewhere off the Devon/Cornwall coast.
