Westward Ho! Beach

The North Devon Coast AONB is defined by its Special Qualities. These are what make our AONB so special. There are 14 Special Qualities and for each of these we have chosen a place within the AONB where you can see what we mean.

Special Quality 7 –  Long, broad sandy beaches backed by extensive dune systems.

The long sandy beaches, flanked by sand dune systems are defining quality of the North Devon Coast AONB and the reason why many people flock to the area. Large beaches such as Woolacombe, Saunton and Croyde exist in North Devon, while in Torridge the 2 mile Westward Ho! beach is also flanked by a small sand and valuable dune system near Sandymere. Most of these sand dune systems are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
